EU Machinery Regulation 2023/1230: key changes for lifting equipment manufacturers and users

The European Union's new Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230, adopted in 2023 and entering application on 20 January 2027, will replace the existing Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC and introduce a more stringent framework for the design, manufacture and placing on the market of lifting equipment in the EU. For manufacturers such as VERLINDE, the transition requires careful assessment of both product documentation requirements and design changes.

Among the most significant changes under the new regulation are requirements for digital instructions to be provided alongside or instead of traditional paper manuals, expanded cybersecurity obligations for connected machinery, and more detailed risk assessment documentation. The regulation also introduces new essential health and safety requirements specifically addressing AI and autonomous systems — relevant to lifting equipment integrating advanced load monitoring and predictive maintenance capabilities.

VERLINDE is actively monitoring the implementation timeline and guidance from European standardisation bodies (CEN/CENELEC), and has established an internal project team to assess the impact on its product range and technical documentation.
